Sermon Summary (Click here for complete sermon)

A Sign of Love

Mary at Bethany gave an extravagant sign of her love by anointing Jesus with very costly perfume -- nard. [John 12:3-8]. [See also Mark 14:3-9; Matthew 26:6-13 and Luke 7:36-50] ....a dramatic sign of love, a deeply compassionate tenderness, a careless outpouring of emotion, committed in true devotion.

Another kind of love;
There are different human emotions associated with the use of the perfume nard in the only other part of the Bible where it is found. That is in the book of Old Testament love songs, the Song of Solomon or the Song of Songs. [See Song of Songs 1:1-4, 12-17; 2:1-6; 4:9-16.]

Anointing in death
Different kinds of love might be celebrated with spices like those which were erotic for the bride and groom in the Song of Songs ....frankincense, myrrh and aloes? ...As at Bethlehem which in part looks forward to the other New Testament use at the burial of Jesus [John 19:38-40; Mark 15:47-16:1; Luke 23:55-24:1.]

The meaning of her action
It was that use which Mary's action anticipated-- she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial Mark's account foretells how she will be remembered for what she has done, and how Judas immediately went out to betray him, which is highly significant in this context while John take up the other side with the determination of the authorities to kill him. [Mark 14:8. See also Mark 14:10-11; John 11:49-53,57;12:23-24] Mary's loving service is the worship of the one whose sacrificial death is about to make him the universal saviour of humankind.

How often do we still allow arguments about practicality, which are really self justifying, like the complaint of Judas, to take us away from centre of our faith, avoiding true commitment and loyalty. For, despite all misunderstandings to contrary, this is what it means to be a Christian, to be related first to Christ, in true devotion honouring him in his death and knowing the power of his resurrection. Mary knew in her heart what it meant. We too say, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

The Gathering of the People of God

Let us worship God. In the name of Christ, Amen.
I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. -- Philippians 3:10-11

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN O love of God how strong and true TIS 139 AHB 75

Most wonderful God, our Creator and Redeemer, our Saviour and Friend, our Guide and King, our devotion to you would grow stronger, more true and more pure, looking only to you in love and thanksgiving. Inspire us now to love and honour, remembering the signs of your love, presence and power in the person of Jesus, in his life, death and resurrection. We offer worship in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Merciful God, our Maker and our Judge,
We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed:
We have not loved you with our whole heart,
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
We repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. -- 1 Timothy 1:15
Hear then Christ's word of grace to us: Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.

NICENE CREED [Back of Hymn Book]

OFFERING [Singing Group: Jesus stand among us]
SHARING TIME [Notices, celebrations and requests for intercessions]
Father, we pray for the holy catholic Church;
that we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the church may truly and humbly serve you;
that your name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all ministers of the gospel;
that they may faithfully proclaim your Word
and administer your holy sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
that there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
that our works may find favour in your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
that they may be delivered from their distress
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
may we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our community, for the life and worship of this congregation, and for those whose needs are known to us....

Most generous God,
no human words or costly gifts
can ever express our thanks and praise
for all that you have done for us through Christ your Son.
Grant that we may gladly give you
the one precious gift that we have to bring,
the offering of our loyalty and love;
and enable us to walk in love for others,
as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us,
a fragrant offering and sacrifice to you.
We ask this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Lord's Supper

HYMN 258 When I survey the wondrous cross

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Thanks and praise ..... in the eternal hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

We thank you ....

[The great prayer of thanksgiving continues, recalling God's goodness in caring for his people, the life and saving work of our Lord Jesus Christ, how he commanded his disciples to remember him with the bread and the wine, and we pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit on us and what we do.]

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.
