That they all may be one

This is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The night before he died, Jesus prayed for us and for all who believe in him, that we all may be one.[John 17:20-21]

What kind of unity?

He said, As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us [John 17:21-23]: as God dwells in us, we together dwell in him. ... as we are one ... As Jesus said elsewhere The Father and I are one. [John 10:30]. ... abide in me, [See communion, the vine, the shepherd [John 6:56; John 15:4-5; John 10:14-15].

Implications for us today

Seeking a wider unity among the churches

In the Uniting Church we have a special commitment to seek visible organic unity with other churches. .... a visible unity, that the world may believe [John 17:21b]. Much has been happening in world, national and regional conversations.

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP

The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice;
let the many coastlands be glad!
The heavens proclaim his righteousness;
and all the peoples behold his glory. -- Psalms 97:1,6

O sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things. -- Psalms 98:1

HYMN 385 The church's one foundation

PRAYER OF ADORATION

CONFESSION
Most merciful God we confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbour. We have taken great benefits with little thanks and we have been more ready to insist upon our rights than to see the needs of others. Have mercy and forgive us, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. -- 1 John 1:9
Hear then Christ's word of grace to us: Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.

HYMN Christ Jesus, living way (Tune: Love Unknown, AHB 257i)

1. Christ Jesus, living Way,
through, whom God's truth is known;
you are our strength and hope;
we live in you alone.
You call us friends and let us know
the way where you would have us go.

2. You came to find the lost;
you stood with the oppressed
and preached the coming day
when wrongs will be redressed.
Embodied in your people still,
help us to know and do your will.

3. Your way led to the cross,
rejected and alone.
God's will your chief desire,
you risked the depths unknown.
We follow you, the Crucified,
by serving those for whom you died.

4. We find ourselves in you,
Companion on our way.
You come to speak with us
and meet us as we pray.
So make us yours and keep us true,
that we may grow as one in you.

5. We ask for minds like yours,
obedient, humble Lord:
our joy to do your will
and ask for no reward.
Exalted Christ, let all acclaim,
your victory, and praise your name!

Across all our barriers of language, race, and nationality:
Unite us, Jesus.
Across all our mutual ignorance, prejudice and hostility:
Unite us, Jesus.
Across all our differences of thought, outlook, and religious allegiance:
Unite us, Jesus.

O God, for your greater glory:
Gather together your separated people.
O God, for the triumph of goodness and truth:
Gather together your separated people.
O God, that there may be one flock and one sheep fold:
Gather together your separated people.
O God, to confound the pride of Satan and his assaults:
Gather together your separated people.
O God, that peace may reign in the world at last:
Gather together your separated people.
