A Community Thanksgiving Service

[Note: This order of service was prepared for a service of thanksgiving which was held in conjunction with a local community festival. It was held out of doors in a public place near the centre of the village shopping centre. Local traders and members of the congregation who were representative of a wide range of community activities were encouraged to bring along something symbolic of their trade or activity and to present it during the service, when prayers of thanksgiving and blessing on the community were offered. It follows the tradition of harvest thanksgiving which was held at this time of the year (see Year C) in previous generations, that is in the early Autumn in Australia. The themes for the season of Lent were followed in the evening service.]

The Gathering of the People of God

1 Thank you for giving me the morning,
thank you for every day that's new,
thank you for new things in store for me
and for work to do.

2 Thank you for all my friends and brothers,
thank you for everyone that lives,
thank you that even greatest enemies
I can forgive.

3 Thank you for many little sorrows,
thank you for every kindly word,
thank you that in the midst of trouble
sympathy is stirred.

4 Thank you, I see your word has meaning,
thank you, I know your Spirit here,
thank you, because you love all people,
those both far and near.

5 Thank you, O Lord, for speaking to us,
thank you for telling us you care,
thank you, O Lord, you came among us
bread and wine to share.

6 Thank you, O Lord, your love is boundless
thank you that I am full of you,
thank you, you make me feel so glad and
thankful as I do.

SCRIPTURE READING Luke 17:11-19 One returned to give thanks

If I were a butterfly, I'd thank you Lord, for giving me wings,
And if I were a robin in a tree, I'd thank you Lord, that I could sing
And if I were a fish in the sea, I'd wiggle my tail and I'd giggle with glee
But I just thank you Father for making me 'me'.

Chorus For you give me a heart and you give me a smile.
You give me Jesus and you made me your child.
And I just thank you Father, for making me 'me'

HYMN SA 24 Calypso Carol with the OFFERING

1 Come, sing praises to the Lord above,
rock of our salvation, God of love;
with delight into his presence move,
for the Lord our God is king!

Chorus He's the king above the mountains high,
the sea is his, the land and sky,
mighty continents and island lie
within the hollow of his hand.

2 Come to worship him and bow the knee,
for the shepherd of the flock is he;
humble creatures in his hand are we -
sing the praise of God the king!

3 Hear the story of his people now,
you with stubborn hearts who will not bow;
learn what happened long ago and how
God can show you he is king.

4 Forty years he kept the prize away,
made them wander till they walked his way,
exiled all of them until the day
they should honour him as king.

1 We plough the fields, and scatter
the good seed on the land,
but it is fed and watered
by God's almighty hand;
he sends the snow in winter,
the warmth to swell the grain,
the breezes and the sunshine
and soft refreshing rain.

Chorus All good gifts around us
Are sent from heaven above
then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord
for all his love.

2 He only is the maker
of all things near and far;
he paints the wayside flower,
he lights the evening star;
the winds and waves obey him,
by him the birds are fed;
much more to us, his children,
he gives our daily bread.

3 We thank thee then, O Father,
for all things bright and good,
the seed-time and the harvest,
our life, our health, our food.
Accept the gifts we offer
for all thy love imparts,
and what thou most desirest,
our humble, thankful hearts.

The Sending Forth of the People of God

1 Sing praise and thanksgiving, let all creatures living
now worship their maker with gladness and song;
all glory and honour we come to him bringing:

Chorus O praise to the Almighty,
sing praise to our God!

2. Our lives of his making he brings to their waking
in darkness he held us in his gracious care,
now into the light we are called from our sleeping:

3 Lord, frame our desirng to do your requiring,
that unto your glory be all that we do;
and where we have faltered, give strength and give healing:
