Preparing the way - repentance
We look forward to the coming of the Lord. John the Baptist, came with warnings and a call to repentance, like the old prophets seeing God as one who sifts and refines: Malachi 3:3 That also became Christian experience: Compare with 1 Peter 1:7 - your faith--being more precious than gold ... is tested by fire.
Compare with human love and security. If you are confident of the love of God, you can repent and start again. The child who has confidence in the love of parents, can confess; or the husband or wife whose marriage has laid a good foundation. Your can always make a new start. The Christian gospel is very different at this point from secular self seeking, self fulfilment in autonomy.
Turning away from the old, is a cleansing and renewal, a radical change
Ephesians 4:22-24 - to be renewed in the spirit of your minds. It is God himself who renews: Zechariah 13:9; Isaiah 44:22 - I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like mist; Jeremiah 31:33.
The possibility of forgiveness
John the Baptist, the last and greatest of the prophets, added something new - forgiveness; and The preaching of Jesus resembles that of John the Baptist, but with greater hope, the Kingdom of God being at hand. Repentance means becoming another person. Matthew 18:3; Luke 5:32 I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.
The time has come for what the prophets expected to be fulfilled. Resurrection is a possibility. So the apostolic preaching:
linking repentance and forgiveness: Acts 3:19; Acts 5:31; and the beginning of a new life: Acts 2:38; Acts 20:21; 2
Corinthians 5:17 - if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has
become new! Jesus came, announcing the good news. Mark 1:14-15.

LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLE: Second Sunday
[A family group or individual comes to the table and one reads:]
On this second Sunday in Advent we remember John the Baptist who came to announce the coming of the light of the orld.
[Two coloured candles are lit (including the one lit last week), and reading continues.]
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe
through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was
coming into the world. John 1:6-9

Service of the Word
INTRODUCTION OF THEME: The promise of light and mercy
FIRST READING Malachi 3:1-4 I am sending my messenger to prepare the way.
FOR THE PSALM The song of Zechariah [Luke 1:68-79]
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David,
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,
and has remembered his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us
that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear,
in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.
By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
