Sermon summary Ordinary 19 Year C (Click here for complete sermon)

A Sense of Urgency

There is a sense of urgency about the parables of the Kingdom in the gospel for today. "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit." [Luke 12:35]. This would have reminded his listeners of how the Passover meal was to be eaten hurriedly as a memorial of the escape from slavery in Egypt [Exodus 12:11].

Being ready for action
The theme of readiness and being equipped for action was a common theme in the life of the early Christians. [Ephesians 6:13-17; 1 Peter 1:13]. Jesus told a number of parables which contained a warning of people missing out when they were not ready: eg. the foolish young bridesmaids [Matthew 25:1-13]. In Luke 12:37 see how they sit down to a meal at a very strange hour, and how, the master waits on his servants. The rewards of being ready to celebrate the Kingdom are great, however strange the servant leadership of the Messiah [Luke 17:7-8; Luke 22:27].

Being ready for service today -- fear and hope
There have been many who have seen in nuclear weapons the kind of fiery end which the world could have under the judgement of God. Jesus warned his disciples not to be carried away by such talk. [Mark 13:6; Matthew 24:6; Mark 13:32-33]. And see Luke 12:39-40. It is one thing to reject narrow minded and fearful warnings, it is quite another to dismiss the sense of urgency in the teaching of Jesus. It is also true that there is a broad way that leads to destruction. Jesus told us to be ready for the narrow way. [Matthew 7:13-14].

The need for clear Christian witness
We need a change of direction and a new sense of urgency. In strangely contradictory ways, people, these days, are ready both to condemn the messengers and to listen. There are great opportunities. Whatever our form of service we must be ready to respond.

Order of Service - Ordinary Sunday 19 Year C

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP
To all God's beloved, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
-- Romans 1:7
Let us worship God. In the name of Christ. Amen.

HYMN AHB 2 Father we praise you now the night is over OR TIS 107 Sing praise and thanksgiving

PRAYER OF ADORATION
CONFESSION
For our foolish or careless use of the gifts of your creation, Lord have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
For our indifference to the needs of others, our brothers and sisters for whom you died, Christ have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
For our neglect of fellowship and the means of grace in worship and private prayer, Lord have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them...." -- John 20:21-23
By the authority of Jesus Christ I declare that God has mercy on you, pardons you and sets you free. Know that your sins are forgiven through Jesus Christ our Saviour. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life.
Thanks be to God.

RECOGNITION OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS

Peace March
l Slap a hand and pat a back and wink an eye; you'll spread good cheer.
Walk a mile and share a smile and talk it over; all comes clear.
Look and see and try to be a friend who lends a listening ear.
Walk and talk together.
Maybe we could live in peace.

2 Look around and hear the sound of children crying out for help.
Take the time to wonder why there's so much food upon the shelf.
Learn the words that Jesus said to love your neighbour as yourself.
Work and pray together.
Maybe we could live in peace.

3 Run the race and keep the pace upon the straight and narrow way.
Keep your eyes upon the prize and follow Jesus day by day.
Sing the song of praise along the road and peace will come your way.
Worship him together.
Maybe we could live in peace.
Maybe we could live in peace.
Maybe we could live in peace.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Prayers for Christian education in schools
... for our local congregation and the wider church
... for the nation and people in need
... for peace in the world
Remember, O Lord, the peoples of the world, divided into many nations and tongues.
Deliver us from every evil that gets in the way of your saving purpose;
and fulfil the promise of peace to your people on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. [Silence]
From the curse of war and the human sin that causes war; from pride that turns its back on you, and from unbelief that will not all you Lord;
O Lord, deliver us.
From hearing and believing propaganda, and speaking lies about other nations; from groundless suspicions and fears that stand in the way of reconciliation;
O Lord, deliver us.
From words and deeds that encourage discord, prejudice, and hatred; from everything that prevents the human family from fulfilling your promise of peace;
O Lord, deliver us.
O God our Father, we pray for all your children on earth, of every nation and race;
That they may be strong to do your will. [Silence]
For the United Nations; for the leaders of the nations, and for all politicians;
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
For all who, in any way, work to further the cause of peace and goodwill; for ordinary people in many lands who live in peace, and who long for peace for all people;
Give peace in our time, O Lord.
Eternal God, use us, despite our ignorance and weakness, to help bring about your holy will. Hasten the day when all people shall live together in your love; for the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
