Speaking the truth in love

If the truth hurts, do you tell the truth? In the passage we read from Ephesians today we are encouraged to speak the truth to our neighbours: (Ephesians 4:25) for we are members of one another. There is a general human value in speaking the truth, as well as the value to Christians of the way our fellowship works to encourage spiritual growth to maturity in the speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15-16).

Being members of one body goes beyond the idea that we need to be truthful so that the parts of the body can work together. We are so involved in the lives of others, and they in our lives, that any falsehood or deception of them is a deception of ourselves. Is anything particularly Christian about it? What Jesus achieved in his work on earth is not only for the good of those who are his followers, but for the benefit of the whole of humanity. The idea that we are members of one another is extended widely to include people beyond our own circle in the right to be told the truth.

After Paul had spoken of the knowledge that had the power to build people up, he went on to warn of false teaching: (Ephesians 4:13-15). Here we come to the hard part. If we are to speak the truth about God and about Christ, who is to say what is true? The truth about God has to be embodied in everyday things, in a living culture. That is why God sent his Son into the world. But then how can we speak of the truth across all the different cultures in which the faith is expressed, even within our own Uniting Church, as was evident in the sexuality debate at the Assembly?

The fact that people came into the church from different backgrounds did not excuse them from living a holy and disciplined life. They had to change -- to be renewed in the spirit of their minds (Ephesians 4:17-24). The claims of love cannot be used to deny the truth. So let us then, in love, speak the truth about God as it has been revealed to us. Please do not forget, at the same time, the kind and gentle way in which Paul called on people to speak the truth (Ephesians 4:31-32). It is not easy, speaking the truth in love. It is only by the grace of God that it can be done at all.

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP Let us worship God.

I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;

my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
--Psalm 130:5-6

HYMN 30 Through all the changing scenes of life

PRAYER OF ADORATION
CONFESSION

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered.
-- Psalm 130:1-4

Loving God, Lord of the Church, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed: we have not loved you with all our heart or served you with all our strength; we have been blind to the vision of a renewed world and deaf to your call to costly discipleship; we have been indifferent to the suffering of others and unwilling to forgive one another. In your mercy, Lord, pardon and restore us, that together in the ministry of Christ we may serve you with joy all the days of our life. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. {8} It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. -- Psalm 130:7-8
This hope in the steadfast love of God is realized for us through Jesus Christ our redeemer, in whom we know that our sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God. Amen.

DOXOLOGY:
Praise the LORD! Praise the name of the LORD; give praise, O servants of the LORD.
Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing to his name, for he is gracious. -- Psalms 135:1,3
