The taste of salt

Salt has a distinctive taste. It is easy to recognise. It stands out, like a light on a hill. Jesus said to his disciples: You are the salt of the earth and You are the light of the world [Matthew 5:13,14].

The visibility of Jesus

Jesus was tempted himself [Matthew 4:5-6]. He dismissed any request to show off his special powers [eg. Matthew 12:38-39]. He could not avoid attracting a good deal of attention by the work that he did in response to the needs of others.

The call to stand out as a witness

We should not be seeking cheap publicity. And let us be honest: it is not easy. We like to be thought well of amongst our peers. [Luke 6:26]

The need to share the faith and support one another

People find that they need other Christians around them to survive the pressure to conform to a hostile world. People of all ages need support in the fellowship of believers to strengthen their own witness. But, we must each answer for ourselves.

What should the light shine on?

Jesus said, that they may see your good works. This saying about "good works" is difficult. It is not in the place of talking about him and we depend for our salvation, not on what we do but on what God has done for us. [Ephesians 2:8-9]

Good works and the moral law

Are we free to make our own choices regardless of what might have been taught previously about what God expects of us? No, though popular preachers might say otherwise. [Romans 6:1-2; Romans 1:18-28; Matthew 5:17-19].

Fulfilment of the law in love

Jesus taught that his followers should do even better than the faithful followers of the old Jewish law. I have come not to abolish but to fulfil [And see Matthew 5:48 and compare John 3:17]. Through his love we know and keep the taste of salt.

SERMON

NICENE CREED:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary

and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from

the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped

and glorified, who is spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.
